The history of KIA MOTORS

The history of KIA MOTORS began exactly on June 9, 1944 with the foundation in the South Korean city of Seoul of the  Kyongseong Precision Industry, whose purpose was to manufacture bicycle wheels. During the Korean War, between 1950 and 1953, the company moved its facilities to the port city of Pusan, in the south of the country, officially adopting the name of KIA Industries. The first syllable ‘KI’ means to leave or to wake up to the world, since the letter ‘A’ means Asia, thus KIA means: to wake up or to leave Asia for the world. The choice of this new name demonstrated the ambitious expansion plans of the company, which went far beyond the Asian continent. It was during this period, in 1952, that the company produced its first bicycle, called Samchonriho. After the end of the war, KIA decided to set up another factory in Shiheung, in order to give vent to orders for bicycles. In the following years the company did not stop growing, and, in 1961, began the production of motors for scooters. Its natural evolution as a means of transportation company was confirmed the following year with the creation of a small commercial three-wheeled vehicle. In 1965 it became the first Korean company to export bicycles to the United States. In the early 1970s, KIA established itself as a manufacturer of commercial vehicles, especially with the Titan models, which eventually became synonymous with truck in the country, and Boxer. At this time, due to the enormous growth of the company, in 1973 a new plant was built in Sohari, that quickly began to produce gasoline engines. Finally in 1974, KIA presented the Korean public with its first passenger model, a compact called Brisa. The following year, KIA was responsible for South Korea’s first export car, when it shipped its first units to Greece and the Middle East. Soon after, confirming more and more its accelerated growth, the company bought the rav4 car cover, a traditional commercial vehicle assembler.By the end of that decade, KIA, which had started production of diesel engines in 1978, had already gained a good international reputation, which allowed it to be chosen in 1979 to manufacture the Peugeot 604 and Fiat 132 models for the South- Korean. Despite its success, in the early 1980s KIA went into decline and underwent a restructuring process. Thus, during the first half of the decade, it focused mainly on the production of commercial vehicles, among which were the Bongo truck models, which had a cargo capacity of 1 tonne, in addition to the Bongo Coach, a kind of mini-bus, and the Ceres truck, one of the automaker’s most successful vehicles introduced in 1983.With their recovery, the Japanese from Mazda and C. Itoh invested in the KIA in 1983, as well as the North American Ford in 1986, allowing the Korean brand to focus on research and technological development. Thus, at the end of the decade, more modern and advanced car models, such as Conord and Capital, emerged. At this time the automaker reached the historic mark of 1 million vehicles produced since its foundation. In 1990 the automaker adopted its current name, KIA MOTORS, and inaugurated a new factory that allowed it to double production and reach the mark of 700 thousand vehicles manufactured per year. The following year, KIA launched itself in the international market with the Sephia and Sportage models, the latter with the characteristics of a sport utility vehicle, entering the European market. In 1992, the automaker officially inaugurated its American subsidiary, thus entering the then largest automotive market in the world. The brand’s 50th anniversary, celebrated in 1994, was marked by the launch of the first Korean 16-valve gasoline engine. In July of that same year, its vehicles began to be commercialized in Portugal. The following year, KIA began production of the Sephia cars in Europe and two years later it launched three new models: the Carnival, the sports car Shuma and a new series of trucks. But the whole process of brand expansion and internationalization came at a high price, and between 1997 and 1998, KIA was very close to bankruptcy, but was eventually acquired by rival Hyundai. Thus, the HYUNDAI KIA AUTOMOTIVE GROUP emerged. At the turn of the new millennium KIA MOTORS presented its new visual identity with the traditional red oval logo. In 2005, KIA MOTORS introduced its new slogan ‘The Power to Surprise’ in order to strengthen its image and demonstrate the automaker’s goals of exceeding consumer expectations with the development of advanced and designer cars extremely bold.Noting that KIA’s ‘astonishing’ power has been assimilated around the world, its products and services have won numerous awards, thanks to its upgraded vehicle line and the agility of the company, which is one of the fastest growing automotive brands in the world. world. Since then, the KIA brand has been the fastest growing brand in the UK, becoming a real success also in other European markets, in the United States and especially in emerging countries.KIA globally launched the modern and daring SOUL, which in Brazil used as jargon the creation of a new category of vehicles in the country, the ‘car design’. By the way, design is the focus of KIA’s growth in the world. The automaker has already redesigned the front grille of its vehicles to allude to the prey of a tiger, which well illustrates the goal of snatching the world market
